The Ottauquechee River in Vermont surged through a corner of the old mill that houses the Simon Pearce shop, destroying the glassblowing furnace in the downstairs factory that drew thousands of tourists annually, many of them children, who had watched wide-eyed as candlesticks and glass bowls were fashioned before them by hand. A Montreal mother who used an unregistered midwife to deliver her baby has had a difficult time getting the Quebec Government to issue a birth certificate for the child,. The matter seems to have been rectified after five months with word that the province will accept an ultrasound photo signed by her doctor as sufficient evidence of the birth. On a trip away from home, staying in a hotel should be a treat not a trial. When we visit friends and family we always stay in a hotel. Call it mental health insurance. We keep our own routine and peaceful space. But what hotel? The beds should be a floating clouds of comfort.

Oddly, as good as the Hilton Hotels are , this is a category in which they fail. Here's a flash. Hotels do not need bathtubs. They need roomy walk in showers. Bathrooms in Great Britain are a nightmare. The tubs are as deep and narrow as a mine shaft. They are downright dangerous. Some times this perilous plumbing shows up at unexpected places. We found it at the Beverly Hills Hotel. No baths on that visit. Just a big bill. As to closets, we need them big and bright.

The safe should be at eye level not on the floor in the dark. In this electrical age it's a good idea to travel with a power bar. For everything from the laptop to the camera charger, there's just substitute. A power bar also gets the plugs up where you can use them , now down behind the dresser.

Until we had eReaders with self charging lights you would have a problem if you wanted to read and your partner wanted to sleep. Very few Hotels have a spot directed reading light on either side of the bed. Finally, a plug for a great hotel. It is the Omni Berkshire, 52nd Street between Fifth and Madison and I have now been there twice. Let’s go back to my list.

Beds: A floating paradise with fabulous linens and pillows. Bathrooms: Double door entrance and you can request a room (all access) double door entrance to walk in shower. Showers heads and water flow perfect and lots of fluffy towels and bathrobes. Closets: Brightly lit, safe at eye level lots of space hangers, ironing board iron and mini bar.

Electrical Outlets: On all the table lamps there are two outlets on the base of each lamp. Four outlets at the desk and more on the walls. WHOOPEE! Access to the rooms: There are two sets of two high speed elevators on either end of the Lobby. Take either set and when you reach your floor you are no more than 60 feet from your room.

Staff: Friendly, Courteous, and helpful and they let you know they want you back in every way. We have been looking for a great hotel in London England for many years for about 450.00 Canadian dollars and fulfills my list. Do you have any suggestions?

Bonnie and I know we need new lines to enhance our fall and holiday look in the stores. We have attended this NYGF for many years and were surprised at how wonderful it was this time. We think this will be the best season ever at Homefront. For the first time in years we will have new serving trays and paper napkin holders (all sizes). Also, there wlil be extended collections of Julia Knight and Michael Aram. Many new platters, bowls and gift items that you have not seen before. A splendid fully intact 3000-year-old iron lion has been uncovered by archaeologists leading the University of Toronto's Tayinat Archaeological Project in southeastern Turkey. The lion is sitting, claws out as befits a guard on a city gateway. The gate provided access to the citadel of Kunulua, capital of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina (ca. 950-725 BC). "Why Rock the Boat?,” a charming spoof on the 1940s Montreal newspaper world, written by Bill Weintraub has been given new life as an e-book on Bev Editions and can be downloaded on Kobo, Kindle, Apple and Smashwords for under four dollars.The book, first published in the 1960s, was made into a feature film by the National Film Board and was the source of much amusement among media folk of the era as well as the general public. The hero is Harry Barnes, who joins the Montreal Daily Witness, “Canada’s most reactionary newspaper,” that closely resembles the Montreal Gazette of the Maurice Duplessis period. Here is a link. Toronto Police Service report: A 14 year old male reports that on August 2, 2011 at approximately 2130 hours, he was in the area of Lawrence Avenue West and Chatsworth Drive, when he was approached by two male suspects. British papers are reporting that home furnishing and cookware chain Williams-Sonoma, which owns Pottery Barn, will open its first store in the UK next year. The retailer has named property firm Harper Dennis Hobbs to find ts first store, which it hope to open in the first half of 2012. Williams-Sonoma is on the hunt for a store in London of between 5,000 sq ft and 8,000 sq ft. The retail group, which has 560 stores in the US and Canada, operates 255 eponymous stores, 180 Pottery Barn and 90 Pottery Barn Kids stores. On entry to the UK it is likely to go head to head with John Lewis, Lakeland and The White Company. Another US home furnishings chain CB2, the sister brand of Crate & Barrel, is also understood to be targeting the UK.

There have been reports in the United States that some children have been cut by the toy. No injuries have been reported in Canada. The newcomer is Steven Goldsmith who has been appointed executive vice-president of merchandising, apparel and accessories. He previously served as executive vice-president of the online division of Limited Brands. Goldsmith has also had hitches with Amazon, SmartBargains.com and ShopNBC. The company says Goldsmith will provide direction for the company's styles and trends in a wide range of departments covering both men's and women's apparel as well as footwear, cosmetics, jewelry and children's nursery products and toys. Last month, Sears Canada nipped off Calvin McDonald, a former executive at Loblaws, to become chief executive. Indigo is going to a whole new place

Indigo, until now the largest bookseller in Canada, is clearly on the way to a whole new world of retail business. It has announced once again that it will carry fewer books and move into consumer goods such as housewares and toys. A further indication of how stressed the firm must be to move out of books is shown in its decision to cut in half the evaluation period for a book's sales down to 45 days. It's upsetting a lot of publishers, especially the small ones. But it also raises the question of how Indigo intends to compete in a whole new business. Its a field with established specialty businesses like Main Course and Homefront, not to mention Ashely's. Then there are the American cut-rate boxes like Homesense. Is there a future for huge high-rent downtown stores in this sector? Time will tell of course but in the end, it's clear the Indigo concept, first modelled on now defunct competitors like Borders, is gone for good.

Something close to hysteria seems to be at work as allegations pile up in the United Kingdom newspaper scandal over phone-hacking. Most notable of the off-shoots is the attack on TV host Piers Morgan by British MP Louise Mensch. Morgan was once an editor of the now slain sensational tabloid News of the World. He's a fast operator no doubt. But, as reported in the linked story, Mensch, who is the wife of the manager of the band Metallica, apparently took some liberties when questioning executives during the parliamentary investigation.

Target very bullish on Canada

Target has formed a separate company, Target Canada, to launch and run its estimated 200 stores over the next few years. And it's interesting to see how bullish the executives are talking. President Tony fisher has bluntly stated that there will up to 74% more staff in the new Targets than in the Zellers stores they will replace. Anyone who knows anything about retail understands that this is a big gamble. It has to be based on as belief that Target can hugely increase volume at these locations. I hope that's right. It will mean a lot of jobs. Fisher said Target will pour up to $10-million into each store site to refurbish it. All I can say is the Zellers are looking pretty sad right now. Target will hire 150 to 200 employees per store, much many more than the Zellers average of 115. You go Target! -- Trish
